 * The number before the slash is calculated using a COC of 0.025 mm., the value reportedly used by Carl Zeiss for engraving DOF data on lens collars. The number after the slash is calculated using a COC of 0.033 mm., a value that yields greater DOF but which relaxes sharpness.

** The focal lengths used in calculations were 16.5, 21.5, 28.4, 35.1, 46.9, and 90.3-mm..

The Hyperfocal Distance is greater than can be set using the LCD screen display. What do I do?

Set your lens to infinity using manual focus and stop down the aperture until the nearest distance you wish to be in focus is within the DOF for that aperture.

What is the significance of a “paper thin” depth of field?

Focusing any lens at its maximum aperture and minimum focusing distance requires that special attention by paid to positioning the focus bracket as precisely as possible in order to have the photograph sharp.

For example, a Leica M 50-mm. f/1.0 lens focused at 1 m. has a depth of field of 19-mm. or 0.74 in. and is reported to be a handful to focus under these conditions. The CZ G mount 90-mm. lens at f/2.8 and its minimum focus distance of 1 m. has a depth of field of 15 mm., or 21 % less than the 50-mm. f/1.0 lens. The placement of the focus brackets using the 90-mm. lens at its limits has to be absolutely precise to achieve sharpness.
